Notice!!
The Capital City Cowboys are on "Summer Hours". Safety meeting for the monthly match will start at 9:30 a.m.
The Capital City Cowboys aka “Cowboys” or “CCC” are affiliated with the Capital City Gun Club, a multi-disciplinary shooting club, located about 10 miles west of Topeka. The “Cowboys” provide a shooting venue for people interested in Western Action Shooting (WAS) affiliated with the Single Action Shooting Society aka SASS and National Rifle Association aka NRA Approved Cowboy Silhouette. CCC has no membership requirements. However, Cowboy shooters are encouraged to join the Capital City Gun Club, NRA and SASS. We welcome everyone interested in the CCC shooting disciplines and invite you to get involved. The Cowboys communicate with participants via email, newsletters and this website. We strive to maintain a high degree of safety that makes the sport perfect for all ages! We hope you will join us and enjoy the many friendships you will make! If you are a WAS passing through the area during a scheduled monthly match, please feel free to join us for some shooting fun. New shooters and spectators are welcome anytime!
What to expect -
Western Action Shooting is a timed
shooting event celebrating the Ol’ West adventures between 1865-1899. The
shooter is provided directions for completing a series of stages using two
six-guns, a pistol caliber lever action rifle, and 1897 or SxS shotgun.
Competitors work together as a posse to time, count misses, ensure safety at the
loading and unloading tables, track scores and cheer for posse members.
Participants choose an alias and wear clothing reminiscent of the time period 1865-1899 or may wear B-Western attire. Clothing can be very simple or elaborate as determined by the competitor. Some competitor’s choose to develop a persona, or life-story, for their alias and choose clothing and firearms that reflect their persona.
The Cowboys periodically offer SASS Range Officer training to help posse members increase their knowledge and skills and to perform the various posse jobs at their best!
Eye and Ear protection is required even for spectators!
Scoring (Please note that SASS rules are followed)
§ Misses add 5 seconds
§ Procedurals (shooting targets in a different order than directed) add 10 seconds
§ Minor safety penalties add additional time
§ (Local rule) One squib is a warning with a second squib a match disqualification
§ Targets and distances for stages conform to SASS specifications.
§ The stages are written with safe gun handling in mind
§ The range is an “open” grass area
§ Temporary props add an Old West ambience to the range
§ Standard monthly shoots involve 6 stages and they typically move quickly.
§ Ammunition required, loaded for Western Action Shooting (lead bullets only): 60 rounds pistol, 60 rounds rifle, and 25 shotgun rounds.
§ Tip! Never hurts to bring a little extra ammo – running out of ammo in the middle of a gunfight isn’t fun!
For men or women, a simple pair of blue denim pants (no shorts), loose fitting, with the belt loops removed, long-sleeved button shirt, and a pair of boots (no tennis shoes) will suffice.
For women, a long skirt, long-sleeved button shirt, and a pair of boots or simple shoes (no tennis shoes) will work just fine.
A hat is recommended. Competitors also wear leather holster rigs to carry their six-guns and have gun carts to carry long guns, ammo and other items useful on the range. Many vendors and patterns for reproduction items are available on-line to help you with ideas or clothing needs. Feel free to ask competitors for assistance!
If you don’t have all the firearms, don’t worry! Come on out. Cowboys are a friendly bunch and someone will loan you what you need. We recommend that shooters new to the sport come watch a match and try out the different guns to ensure appropriate firearm purchases that will meet your individual needs.
The Capital City
Cowboys SASS shoots are held on the fourth Sunday of each month.
To find us, take Interstate 70 West from Topeka to the Valencia Road Exit. Cross over Valencia Rd to the west bound access road and follow it until you are forced to turn north (right) onto Docking Road. Turn West (left) at the first opportunity onto NW 4th Street. The gun club is a little more than ½ mile. Entrance is on the right (north). Follow the gun club road until you see the Cowboys. (see map)
