The matches held on October 13th concluded the 2012 Cowboy Lever Action Silhouette shooting season. Even the threat of wind, rain and even hail didn't stop those dedicated to our sport from showing up. We had to shoot between a few raindrops and some folks got a little wet on resetting the targets but there was very little thunder and no one minded waiting out the rain. It was decided we could not utilize the highpower range due to the rain and mud so we only shot the rimfire and pistol cartridge matches. There were 18 competitors this month. Most of the regulars from various parts of the state brought their leverguns and shooting eyes one last time to share in the camaraderie and stories about planned hunting trips and vacations. Our friend and long time competitor Dale Sanders brought his friend Steve Fox to shoot his first silhouette matches. Steve managed to hold his own against most of the veteran shooters and seemed to enjoy himself. Hope to see him (and Dale) back next spring. I want to thank everyone for their efforts- especially Beth- our statistics officer and scorekeeper who keeps us all straight. There were 10 shooters able to cash in on the "magic animal" of the day- the pig and collect $5.00 by hitting all 10 animals.

Its a certainty the adverse weather didn't dampen the competitive spirit with several competitors shooting master class scores. Ed Middleton came within 2 points of the perfect score in the pistol cartridge match and two of them came within 3 points of a perfect score of 40/40 in the rimfire match- Ed Middleton and Jim Luke both shot 37's. They squared off in a 5 animal duel at the Turkey line for the match winner shoot-off where Jim edged out Ed in the second bank of targets. A really good ending to the matches and the season.

A major topic of discussion was concerning the 1st Annual Jim Hovey Regional tournament held at Tappan Hill gun club last weekend. Congratulations to Kevin Griggs and his crew for a well run tournament. It was good to see all the support for Pat Hovey from a lot of old friends. She said she enjoyed seeing everyone while helping with the scorekeeping and registration and giving out the rewards after the matches.

I'm thinking we will all now have a chance to clean and repair the rifles, maybe put on that new sight or get that trigger/action job done and reload all the brass for next year's competition. Its a little early yet but Beth and I want to wish everyone well for the approaching holiday season. May you all have a safe and wonderful winter and come back next spring. I'll keep the animals fed and watered until then. Fair winds and calm seas everyone.
