NEXT MATCHES (TENTATIVELY)
                               13 MARCH 2010

Regrettably, the 2009 Cowboy Lever Action Silhouette match season has ended. With it, all the camaraderie, the untold tall tales and BS from this year must wait until March 2010. On a positive note the year was one of extremely good fortune regarding the weather and participation- especially for the last matches. There were a total of  30 competitors. Some from  St. Louis and southern Missouri as well as western Kansas. Even a lone shooter from Pennsylvania joined us. The day started cold and damp with a slight penetrating wind. But when the temperature hit the lower 50's and the wind slowed down- the weather was a perfect shooting day. The white animal targets were sharply in contrast with the dull background. The year also ended with an unusual amount of excitement. When the last target bit the dust and scores were tabulated it was determined we had 2 match winners in the smallbore match. Not only did Ed Middleton and Jim Luke have the same total scores but the same exact animal count all the way through the match. Jim and Ed then squared off in a sudden death duel- no, not at each other! They each shot a bank of Turkeys at 75 meters. Both hit their first animal squarely and repeated the feat on the second and the third target. It was the fourth shot that made the match winner in the shoot-out. Jim Luke was declared the winner. Ed Middleton very graciously offered congratulations and they departed from the duel as friends. (until next year!!) With shooting weather being optimal and apparently feeling confident, Jim Luke opted to attempt a long run on the Turkey line in smallbore and proceeded to hit 47 targets without a miss. A phenominal effort ( with maybe a little luck and a good spotter thrown in) which came within 7 hits of tying the national record of 54 straight. He said something about having to stop before he ran out of ammunition----- (?)
So, the season ended with a bang (please excuse the pun!), the animals were all put away and everyone went home feeling they had a pretty good year. Beth and I will miss the monthly gatherings and camaraderie and look forward to next March. Again, thanks to everyone who helped make this year- and all the past years successful as well as enjoyable for all. We wish everyone a safe and warm Holiday Season!!
